Since its founding in 1957, the Hellenic American Union has been one of the most prominent institutions on the Greek cultural scene. As a not-for-profit, educational and cultural institution, its status enables the institution to use income earned in its fee-bearing activities to subsidize a large number of free community-service activities and resources, such as exhibitions, lectures, screenings, performances, concerts, cultural publications.
Through its rich cultural program, the Hellenic American Union is a forum where the public can encounter new trends in art, science and technology from Europe and the United States.
The two galleries of the Hellenic American Union, ″John F. Kennedy″ and ″Nikos Hadjikyriakos – Ghikas″, have become a reference point for friends of the visual arts. The galleries have hosted artworks by some of the most significant representatives of contemporary art: Joseph Kosuth, Bruce Davidson, Peter Greenaway, Joel – Peter Witkin, Miguel Rio Branco, Joseph Beuys, Jerry Schatzberg, Terry Atkinson to name a few.
In organizing exhibitions of international caliber that span a wide spectrum of media, themes and artistic currents, we hope to broaden the public’s interest in and encourage its involvement with contemporary art.
Besides the visual arts exhibitions, there is a wide variety of cultural activities,, including concerts, lectures, screenings and performances. Many eminent Greek and foreign figures in the arts, sciences and literature have spoken at the Hellenic American Union Auditorium “Angelos D. Katakouzenos” (Manos Hadjidakis, Giorgos Seferis, Andreas Empeirikos, Karolos Koun, Nikolaos Hadjikyriakos – Ghikas, Marios Ploritis, Michalis Kakogiannis, Louis Armstrong, Elia Kazan, Neil Armstrong, Rod Steiger, Jeremy Rifkin, Bruce Davidson, Nicholas Christakis and others), while film tributes and screenings of rare archival material have also been held, as well as theater performances and performances by contemporary dance groups.
