Athens Municipal Art Gallery
Μουσείο

The gallery's collections feature the visual works of 3,000 artists - most of them Greek, with few exceptions - which are representative of the trends, foreign influences and fruitful discussions which have marked the journey of Greek art.

It is worth mentioning that half of the artworks which the gallery presently hosts were acquired between 1930 and 1940.

Almost all of the Greek artists who represent milestones in Greek visual creation and contributed to the formation of 20th century modern Greek art are represented by significant works in the Gallery's collection. Among the most positive elements is a collection of engravings showcasing works by great instructors of this art form, as well as its worthy successors and new engravers.

Athens' Municipal Art gallery is housed in a neoclassical building on Koumoundourou Square, built in 1874 based on a design by architect Panagis Kalkos. The Gallery opened
at this location on September 22, 1982, following its move from the Cultural Centre on Akadimias Street, where it was situated since 1974.

Additionally, educational programmes for children of preschool, state and high school age take place at the gallery (though not during summer).

The Municipal Gallery's activities include an exceptionally rich programme of free guided tours of archaeological and other cultural sites, with themes such as "Old neighbourhoods of Athens", "The Athens of Kostis Palamas", "The 1st Cemetery", "Acropolis" and many others (the programme is not conducted during summer)
