Network for Children’s Rights

The idea for establishing the Network for Children’s Rights was born in the spring of 2000, when an incident of child abuse led a small group of people to come together and take an initiative towards upholding and protecting the rights of children in Greece. This group, which consisted of teachers, writers, artists and journalists, soon found out that there was a need to support and uphold the rights set out in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, to inform the public and find ways to intervene effectively where help was required.

A decade later, our group has expanded and, with the help of our volunteers and donors, we are now able to reach out to and help children who are refugees, immigrants, expatriates or who come from underprivileged backgrounds. We mainly focus in children and their families who live in blighted areas of Athens.
The Network for Children’s Rights is a registered not for profit association. The Network’s general assembly determines strategy and elects annually the Network’s Board of Directors. The latter decides operations and monitors daily activities with the help of the Permanent Secretariat.

What we do:
Our efforts revolve around educating local communities about children’s rights and providing children and their families with educational opportunities. With the help of our volunteers and with a stress on the respect of cultural diversity, we have created our first Cultural Lab(Community Center) where we offer Greek and English language courses, tutoring for children who are in school, music and arts lessons, and where we also operate a public library accessible to all children and their parents. We have also started offering seminars addressed especially to parents of preschool and school children, aimed at preparing them for their role and responsibilities and at enabling them to better communicate with their children. Working closely with municipalities and other institutions, we strive to identify and address problems related with immigration, violence in schools and integration for children from different backgrounds.
